Quiet Time Notes

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 NIV

One key aspect about God and His character I learned recently is that He remains the same. People change, environments change, places change, everything changes BUT God.

God is consistent and reliable. It is a beautiful thing to know that because of this consistency, we can trust Him. I remember soaking in a song by Victoria Orenze and one poignant moment in the ministration is when she said, ‘God is composure’. As she ministered, she said how the world has changed; people do all sorts of things but in all of this, God is patient and has remained composed.

When we look at the definition of Composure, it is: “the state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself”. A similar term to apply here is self-control. So, Victoria Orenze’s confident statement about God is true. I love this because it reminds me that although people change and situations can become tough or unbearable, we have this one constant thing in our lives that anchors us and it is God. This is still the case in the ways he has revealed Himself to us as the Father, as Christ Jesus (The fathers revelation of Himself to man) and the Holy Spirit.

And that’s the scriptural focus today, to help you to re-focus on Him. No matter what happens around us, to us, within us or anything else, God still remains good and true to His word.

In James 1:17, there is a part of the verse that became a vivid picture as I reflected on Gods unchanging nature. The scripture reads, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV.

As I read this, I caught this image of how we have shadows which change and vary in size, height, angles and this can be dependent on many things such as the position of the sun, our proximity to our surroundings and more. It reminds me of our general human behaviour of being inconsistent. One day we may be happy, another day we are sad, one day we can be motivated and the next become lazy and procrastinate. We are lead by our feelings and the seasons we are in but with God He remains the same through it all and I hope to see believers come to that revelation about God.

He is trustworthy, reliable and a consistent Father. So this week, despite what happens, know that God is still God. God is still faithful, God is still good and He remains the same.
